About Us

On the 16th April 1885,in Perth a meeting was convened to frame a Constitution and rules for the Society which has continued to this day.   The first monthy meeting was held on the 11th June 1885 and the first Scottish Concert was held on the 14th July 1885.  One of the objects of the newly formed Society was to cultivate and foster the love of,and futher the interests in,Art,Literature,Music and Sports of Scotland.
During the Great War (1914-1918) the Society members were active in sending comforts to the troops overseas, and the secretary at the time ( Mr. Gibson )was given the job of forming a concert party to entertain troops in training at Blackboy Hill Army Camp at Greenmount.
To futher the object of Scottish music,a special meeting was held on the 25th August 1915 to form a Pipe Band.  This was duly agreed to at the following council meeting and The Caledonian Societies Pipe Band came into being.  Later known as The Caledonian Pipe Band of W.A.it was for many years one of the States leading bands.
Between the turn of the century and the year 1916 the Society was known as The Perth(W.A.) Caledonian Society, until the 30th November 1916 when it became incorporated as The Caledonian Society of W.A. the title it has retained to the present day.
During the Second World War (1939-1945) with so many of the councillors serving in the forces, female members of the Society were elected to the Council for the first time.
History was made again in1990 when Mrs Isabel Llyod was elected as Worthy Chief of the Society,a position previously held by men only.Since then three other women have held the position.Mrs Joy Bryden,Mrs Sandra Lockyer and Present Chief Mrs Annie Henderson.
The Society conducts a Social Evening on the last Saturday of every month except December when we celebrate Hogmanay the 31st December.
The Society is open to any person willing to uphold the aims and traditions of the Society and though initally members had to be Scots or of Scottish decent. We now have many who are not Scots but as long as they are willing to uphold our Constitution and rules of the Society anyone is welcome to become a member.
